Effective January 1, 2023[1], under the guidance of the AMA CPT Editorial Panel, many evaluation and management (E&M) service types are being consolidated. This should reduce redundancy and improve accuracy.
Hospital E&M Services
Throughout 2022, there were CPT codes for both Observation Care E&M services (CPT® 99218 – 99220, 99224 – 99226) and Hospital Inpatient E&M services (CPT® 99221 – 99223, 99231 – 99233). Recognizing that the practitioner services for these two E&M types are essentially identical, the AMA CPT Editorial Panel has decided to consolidate these E&M types effective January 1, 2023 under the new title of, “Hospital Inpatient or Observation Care E&M,” represented by CPT® 99221 – 99223 and 99231 – 99233.
Observation Care Services
Throughout 2022, there were CPT codes for both Observation Care Discharge Day Management (CPT 99217) and Observation or Inpatient Care Services, Including Admission and Discharge Services (CPT 99234 – 99236). The AMA CPT Editorial Panel has decided to consolidate these E&M types effective January 1, 2023 into one E&M type, which will be titled, “Hospital Inpatient or Observation Care Same Day Admission and Discharge,” represented by CPT 99234 – 99236 and “Hospital Inpatient or Observation Discharge Day Management,” represented by CPT® 99238, 99239.
Home or Residence Services
Throughout 2022, there were CPT codes for both Domiciliary, Rest Home, or Custodial Care services (CPT 99324-99328, 99334-99337) and Home Visit services (CPT 99341-99345, 99347-99350). The AMA CPT Editorial Panel has decided to consolidate these E&M types effective January 1, 2023 under the new title of, “Home or Residence Visit,” represented by CPT® 99341, 99342, 99344, 99345, and 99347-99350.
Deleted CPT® Codes
Effective January 1, 2023, the following CPT codes will be deleted and will no longer exist:
- CPT 99241
- CPT 99251
- CPT 99318
- CPT 99217 – 99220
- CPT 99224 – 99226
- CPT 99324-99328
- CPT 99334-99337
