A global internet outage which began Friday continues to impact many hospitals as well as banking and transportation sectors. On Friday, a faulty software update caused technological havoc worldwide, affecting financial institutions, media companies, government offices, airlines, and hospitals. The “Blue Screen of Death” seen on computer monitors was caused by a faulty update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, affecting customers running on Microsoft Windows, which is only the world’s most popular operating system for personal computers.
The problem isn’t over yet. In an interview on NBC’s “Today Show,” CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz apologized for the impact the problem has caused. “We know what the issue is”. However, he noted it could take “some time” for certain customers to recover, especially those lacking in-house expertise.
Many doctor’s offices and healthcare institutions are still recovering from the Change Healthcare cyberattack. It seems that hacking, ransomware and other intentionally malicious assaults are not the only risks in the digital age. Human error may be just as much a risk, which in some ways is an even scarier thought.
