A 2/26 article in Chief Healthcare Executive entitled “Hospitals, providers spent $25B on battles over claims, report finds” (it’s free) reports, “Hospitals and other providers are spending a lot more money in battles over insurers over paying claims, according to a new analysis by Premier Inc.” The analysis found that “health systems, hospitals and post-acute care providers paid more than $25.7 billion in claims adjudication in 2023, up from $19.7 billion the previous year, an increase of 23%.” Furthermore, the analysis “found that nearly 70% of claim denials are reversed.”
At a time when hospitals and practitioners are struggling to keep their doors open thanks to increasing overhead and decreasing payments, they also must employ more resources just to get their claims paid. (No wonder practitioners in private practice have been tempted by the big dollars to be made from skin substitutes.)
