CMS Approves Wound Care Quality Measures Created by the US Wound Registry

The US Wound Registry guides industry quality metrics for the 11th straight year.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (Dec. 19, 2024) — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has once again approved 7 quality measures produced by the US Wound Registry, continuing a decade-long streak of advancing the quality of care in the wound management field. This marks the 11th consecutive year that CMS has recognized and approved quality measures developed by the US Wound Registry, underscoring the organization’s leadership in wound care and its influence on public health policy.

These USWR suite of CMS endorsed quality measures can be reported by wound care practitioners participating in the Quality Payment Program via the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). Wound care clinicians can use these measures to meet the MIPS quality reporting requirements and avoid potential Medicare penalties. These measures cover a range of critical wound care practices, providing healthcare professionals with actionable, evidence-based benchmarks to improve wound outcomes.

“We are extremely proud to continue our role as a driving force in the field of wound care quality,” said Dr. Caroline Fife, Executive Director of the US Wound Registry. “Our ability to deliver innovative, relevant, and clinically impactful quality measures has established the US Wound Registry as the primary driver of quality performance in wound care. These measures play a vital role in ensuring that clinicians provide the highest standard of care while meeting regulatory requirements.”

The US Wound Registry’s quality measures provide the foundation for clinical decision-making, improving wound care practices and reducing variations in care. USWR quality measures represent a key opportunity for clinicians to demonstrate the effectiveness of their wound care services.

Since its inception, the US Wound Registry has continuously worked to advance the field of wound care by developing and refining quality measures that align with the latest clinical evidence. Its leadership has enhanced the quality of care for patients with chronic wounds and influenced healthcare policy by ensuring that wound care is recognized by CMS as an essential area of clinical improvement.

“We look forward to continuing our work with CMS and other stakeholders to improve wound care delivery and empower clinicians to provide the best care possible,” added Dr. Fife. “By using our quality measures, clinicians will not only help enhance patient outcomes but also position themselves to succeed in the ever-evolving landscape of value-based healthcare.”

Wound care providers are encouraged to utilize these quality measures in their practice to maintain compliance, reduce the risk of penalties, and enhance the overall quality of patient care. The US Wound Registry’s commitment to improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary costs positions it at the forefront of the wound care industry.
