A Health Information Exchange Specifically for Wound Care Centers

Intellicure has joined the US Wound Registry’s Health Information Exchange. This means that wound centers using Intellicure’s wound care EHR, the Intellicure Wound Care App for Epic, or the Intellicure Wound Care App for Cerner, may now participate in the world’s first wound care HIE ever.

What is an HIE?

A Health Information Exchange is a hyper-secure, government-approved portal wherein medical clinics can connect to share specific, allowed patient information via the clinics’ EHRs (electronic health records). An HIE replaces the need for patients or clinical staff to retrieve medical records from the patient’s previous healthcare provider. The data shared is strictly limited to records relevant to the patient’s treatment and only accessible by the physician and staff for the purpose of treatment.

How does the HIE work for Intellicure users?

Intellicure user sites who join the US Wound Registry’s HIE will see an HIE button on the Patient Registration page of IntellicureEHR. When creating a new patient, if that patient has been seen previously at a wound practice participating in the US Wound Registry’s HIE, the white HIE button will appear, indicating that the HIE may have records for that patient from another practice. The Intellicure user may click on the HIE button and follow the directions to view the patient’s past wound care records instantly.

How the HIE Impacts MIPS

By participating in the HIE for at least six months, you will have completed the HIE Bi-directional Exchange measure of the Promoting Interoperability requirement of CMS’ 2024 Quality Payment Program (AKA MIPS, the Merit-based Incentive Payment System). HIE participation accounts for 50% of the Promoting Interoperability requirement in MIPS 2024 if you are claiming an exemption for the eRx measure, which many are.

In 2025, the US Wound Registry’s HIE will meet the TEFCA Exchange measure, which connects HIEs across the U.S. for further continuity of care.
